Why do meetings with lawyers have to be in an office? Well I figure it’s because that’s the way it has always been done.  Smell those old books, feel that leather couch, listen to those typists. Now look around, does it feel inviting? Do you feel comfortable? I sure don’t, and I’m the lawyer.

Don’t get me wrong, I have certainly had my fair share of working in an office and I still do from time to time.  When I first heard of other lawyers in big cities meeting their clients in cafés I thought, Oh My Gosh, how brilliant is that!  It isn’t rocket science I know, but it is certainly a different way of delivering the service of law to you.

How about a meeting in the park where the children can play and be out of earshot? What about the beach, there are no rules against that. Imagine the sounds and the smells and now how do you feel?

I will never forget my client, let’s call her Busy Betty. She was always busy running around with kids and groceries and running her little creative business.  Whilst over the phone time also worked for her she preferred to meet with me in person.  Problem was that when she did have time for a meeting she wanted to get her workout done.  So we came up with the perfect solution and I bought along my joggers!  The walk and talk – so therapeutic really – for both of us. Imagine the fresh air and clear head after those meetings.

Nothing really beats the smell of freshly brewed coffee though, it is comforting and warm and helps you say the things that need to be said.   Let’s face it, when you feel better you make better decisions.
